The Mandate system was established by the League of Nations in 1919 for victorious powers of the First World War to administer conquered territories towards independent self-rule.[1] The British Mandate for Palestine—which formally came into force in July 1922 and ended in May 1948—was complicated by its adherence to the Balfour Declaration, followed by the contradictory statement that “nothing should be done which might prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine.”[2]
